Inspired by his favourite places to visit with his family, contemporary fine artist, Richard Rowan, has placed the Scottish landscape at the heart of this new collection. Fascinated by the nature that surrounds us, Rowan explores a sense of change in these paintings, showing that landscapes are not still, they are constantly transforming. Studying landscapes frame by frame, the artist is always watching for the perfect moment to immortalise on glass, aware of even the smallest shifts in his surroundings.

Often finding himself lost in moments of observing a landscape, Rowan shares the feelings of awe and escapism that he experiences in nature through his artwork for people to enjoy in their own homes. Encouraging people to stop and enjoy the endless nuances and drama of nature, Rowan hopes that his work will prevent people from taking the beautiful landscapes that surround us for granted.

As with all of Rowan’s work, this new collection is best experienced as an immersive journey. To complement the dramatic landscapes, the collection is paired with evocative music by Hans Zimmer. Tracks like ‘A Place in the Sky’ from The Creator Soundtrack bring a sweeping, cinematic quality to the paintings, while ‘Origins of Life’ sets the stage for the intensity of ‘Tempest’s Touch’.

There’s something universal about the way we all first learn to draw a landscape – the curve of a hill, the arc of the sun, a path winding its way through the page – but for Rowan, it is about taking that simplicity and elevating it. Observing the artwork, the scene is already familiar to us, but the hyperreal detail in the glass paintings sets Rowan’s work apart.

Infusing movement, drama and light, the artist deepens the contrast, sharpens the details and lets the small shifts in nature take centre stage. Rowan believes that it is in fleeting moments that something greater is revealed, whether it be a passing cloud, the glow of evening light catching on the horizon, or the way mist clings to the fields in the early morning.

Richard Rowan is a true innovator of his unique painting technique. Working in reverse, he paints from underneath the glass. Starting with the finishing touches of the foreground, he paints in layers, completing the background last.

Working to constantly evolve his craft, Rowan sets himself new challenges with every collection. Developing his techniques to be able to best express the beauty and awe of nature to the viewer, his goal is to paint the landscape with absolute fidelity. Whilst painting this collection, he developed a new technique to add depth to the clouds. A meticulous process of repeated painting and etching provides this painting with an unmatched level of realism.

Wanting to honour the endless inspiration that nature provides, Rowan has continued to include colour in the foreground of the paintings within this collection. Creating an incredibly photorealistic finish, the artist has included four birds within each painting, representing his family.
