Our collectors were treated to a surprise when award-winning actor, comedian and TV presenter Billy Connolly stopped by our Glasgow gallery to launch the third instalment of his sell-out collection, Born On A Rainy Day. This hand-signed collection has now sold out, but you can shop from the rest of Billy's collection here.
The selection of humorous black-and-white drawings takes its name from a drizzly 2007 day in Montreal, Canada, where Billy was touring. Keen to escape the rain, he visited a local art shop and bought felt tips and a sketchbook. His efforts paid off: five years later, in 2012, he celebrated his first-ever foray into fine art - which was an instant success.
Speaking about his love for creating art, Billy says: “My art bears no relation to comedy or music. It is pure and unjudged and I am creating for myself. It is personal and private, whereas with a film, comedy show or music you expect people to be critiquing, watching, assessing. Art is different - it liberates you.”
Given Billy’s huge popularity in his native Scotland and beyond, it’s no surprise that news of his collection launch and appearance at our gallery went viral overnight. He was subsequently featured in titles such as BBC News, i News and the Scottish Sun. The star later appeared on The One Show to chat about his collection and his new book: Made in Scotland: My Grand Adventures in a Wee Country.
He also appeared in the BBC Two documentary Billy Connolly: Made in Scotland over Christmas.
The book brings together the best of Billy's drawings with a selection of his most beloved stories. In celebration of the launch, each purchase of Billy’s works will be complimented with a copy of ‘The Accidental Artist’*, allowing you to discover Billy’s unique and humorous insights into his journey as an artist.
